The air in the villa was thick with the scent of salt and frangipani, a heady perfume that clung to the back of Julian’s throat. He stood on the veranda, the dying sun bleeding hues of orange and violet across the Aegean Sea. It was a view that cost more than his first car, a fact he tried not to think about as he swirled the amber liquid in his glass. This was supposed to be a retreat, a week of solitude to untangle the knot of his latest novel, but his publisher had insisted he not go alone. And so, his editor had sent her.

Chloe.

She was a complication he hadn’t anticipated. Thirty-two, sharp as a tack, with a smile that was all business and eyes that held a glimmer of something far less professional. He’d known her for two years, their relationship a carefully maintained equilibrium of professional respect and mutual antagonism. She was the one who told him his plots were predictable, his prose too florid. He was the one who called her a glorified spell-checker with an inflated sense of her own literary acumen. They were oil and water, and being trapped with her on a private Greek island was a recipe for spontaneous combustion.

He heard the soft pad of her footsteps on the marble floor behind him. He didn’t turn.

“The sunset is beautiful,” she said, her voice softer than it ever was in a boardroom or a cramped edit session. It was a voice for quiet confessionals and low-lit rooms.

“It’s a sunset,” he grunted, taking a sip of his scotch. “They’re all the same. You’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.” He knew he was being an ass, a defensive reflex she always managed to trigger.

She came to stand beside him, leaning against the white stone balustrade. She was wearing a simple white linen sundress, her dark hair loose and tumbling down her back in a way that made his fingers ache to touch it. The fabric clung to the gentle curve of her hips, and a light breeze pressed it against the soft swell of her breasts. He forced his eyes back to the horizon.

“You’re a cynic, Julian,” she said, not looking at him either. “And you’re a liar. You wrote three paragraphs about a sunset in *The Salt of the Earth*. It was the best thing in the book.”

He felt a flicker of surprise. She remembered. And she’d complimented it. This was new territory. “Flattery will get you nowhere. I’m not writing a single word this week.”

“I’m not here to make you write,” she said, her voice dropping a little lower, a note he hadn’t heard before. “I’m here to make sure you rest.”

He finally turned to look at her. The fading light caught the gold flecks in her brown eyes. The professional veil she always wore was down, and what he saw beneath it was raw and a little bit thrilling. It was a challenge. It was an invitation.

“And how do you propose to do that?” he asked, his own voice a low rumble.

She didn’t answer with words. She reached out, her fingers lightly brushing the back of his hand holding the glass. The touch was electric, a jolt of pure heat that shot up his arm. His breath hitched. He saw the corner of her mouth twitch, a small, victorious smile. She knew exactly what she was doing.

The seduction, he realised, had already begun.

The next day, she was a phantom. He saw her in glimpses: a flash of a cerulean blue bikini from the corner of his eye as he read by the pool, the shape of her legs disappearing up the stone steps to her room. She’d left a book on the coffee table, a collection of erotic poetry by Pablo Neruda, a page dog-eared to a particularly explicit verse: *I want to do with you what spring does with the cherry trees.* He picked it up, his thumb tracing the words, a heat pooling in his gut. It was a deliberate provocation. The first shot fired.

He found himself listening for her, every splash of water or faint sound of music from her room a distraction he couldn't afford. He tried to write, but the words wouldn't come. Every character he typed felt like a stand-in for her, every scene a precursor to the one he couldn't get out of his head. The way her hair would feel wrapped around his fist. The taste of her mouth. The sounds she would make.

That evening, he found her in the kitchen. She was wearing a simple black dress, her shoulders bare, the curve of her collarbone a delicate line in the soft light. She was chopping vegetables, the rhythmic thud of the knife a soothing, domestic sound that felt dangerously intimate. A half-empty bottle of wine stood beside her.

“You’re cooking,” he stated, leaning against the doorframe.

“Someone has to,” she said without looking up. “You’ve been subsisting on scotch and brooding for two days.”

He walked over to the counter, standing close enough to feel the warmth radiating from her skin. He could smell her perfume, a complex mix of jasmine and something darker, like Amber. He reached around her, his chest brushing her back, to pick up the wine bottle. She stiffened for a second, then relaxed into him, her body yielding slightly.

“Pour me a glass,” she murmured, her voice husky.

He did, his hand brushing hers as he handed it to her. She took a sip, her eyes meeting his over the rim of the glass. The air crackled. The thud of the knife on the cutting board resumed, but it was slower now, more deliberate.

“What are we doing, Chloe?” he asked, his voice dangerously quiet.

She set the knife down and finally turned to face him. “I’m making dinner. You’re hovering. It’s very irritating.”

“That’s not what I’m asking.”

She took a step closer, closing the small space between them. The wine glass was still in her hand. Her gaze was unwavering. “What do you think we’re doing, Julian? We’re on a beautiful island. We’re two consenting adults. The line between editor and author has been… blurry for a long time. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed.”

He had noticed. He’d noticed everything. The way she’d bite her lip when she was reading something that excited her. The way her eyes would track him across a room. The way their arguments were less about work and more about a tension that had nowhere to go but up.

“You’re a very dangerous woman,” he said, his voice thick with a desire he was tired of fighting.

“I’m just a woman who knows what she wants,” she corrected, her hand coming up to rest on his chest. Her fingers were cool against the fabric of his shirt. “And right now, I want to see if you’re brave enough to take it.”

That was all the permission he needed.

He took the wine glass from her hand and set it on the counter. Then he cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs tracing the line of her jaw. Her eyes widened slightly, a flicker of surprise breaking through her confident facade. But she didn’t pull away. He leaned in, his mouth hovering a breath away from hers.

“This isn’t a game, Chloe,” he whispered, his voice a gravelly rasp. “If I start this, I’m not stopping.”

“Good,” she breathed, and closed the distance between them.

Her lips were softer than he’d imagined, and they tasted of the wine and a sweetness that was all her. The kiss started out tentative, a question, but it quickly turned into an answer. He deepened it, his tongue demanding entry, and she opened for him with a soft moan that vibrated through his entire body. His hands slid from her face, one tangling in the silken mass of her hair, the other skating down her back to press her against him. He could feel every curve, every line of her body pressed against his, the heat of her seeping through the thin fabric of her dress.

He broke the kiss, his breathing ragged. He looked at her, her face flushed, her lips swollen and dark. She was beautiful, and she was his.

Without a word, he took her hand and led her out of the kitchen, past the veranda, and up the stairs to his room. The silence was punctuated only by the sound of their breathing and the distant cry of a gull. The villa’s polished stone floors were cool under his bare feet.

His room was dark, the only light a sliver of moonlight painting a silver stripe across the floor. He didn’t bother with the lamp. He wanted her in the shadows, wanted to feel her rather than see her. He closed the door behind them, the soft click a final, definitive seal on their shared secret.

He turned to her, and she was already unbuttoning his shirt. Her fingers were nimble, desperate. She pushed the fabric from his shoulders, her hands exploring the planes of his chest, the muscles of his abdomen. Her touch was confident, not shy, and it inflamed him. He groaned, capturing her mouth with his again, a frantic, hungry kiss.

His own hands found the zipper of her dress. He pulled it down slowly, the sound a harsh whisper in the quiet room. The dress loosened, and he pushed it from her shoulders, letting it fall to a puddle of black fabric at her feet. She stood before him in nothing but a pair of simple black lace panties. The moonlight gleamed on her skin, perfect and pale. Her breasts were full, the nipples tight and dark, begging for his mouth.

He took a step back, his eyes raking over her. He wanted to savour this, to burn the image into his memory. Her breathing was shallow, her chest rising and falling with a quick, excited rhythm.

“You’re so beautiful,” he said, the words sounding trite and inadequate.

“Stop talking,” she whispered, her voice trembling with anticipation.

He didn’t need to be told twice. He closed the distance, his mouth finding hers again as he walked her backwards toward the bed. The backs of her knees hit the mattress, and she fell back onto the crisp white sheets, a soft gasp escaping her lips.

He followed her down, his body covering hers, the weight of him a delicious pressure. He kissed a path down her neck, his teeth grazing the sensitive skin below her ear. She arched into him, a moan catching in her throat. He moved lower, his mouth closing over one of her nipples. He sucked it into his mouth, his tongue swirling around the stiff peak, and she cried out, her back bowing off the bed. Her fingers dug into his shoulders, her nails leaving tiny crescents in his skin.

He worshipped every inch of her. He kissed the hollow of her throat, the curve of her hip, the soft skin of her inner thigh. Her scent was intoxicating, a musky, sweet perfume that was driving him out of his mind. He hooked his fingers under the elastic of her panties and slid them down her legs, his gaze fixed on the dark triangle of hair.

He lowered his head, his tongue parting her folds. She tasted like the sea and honey, a flavour that was uniquely her own. She gasped, her hips bucking against his mouth as he explored her. He found her clit and circled it with his tongue, first lightly, then with more pressure. Her hands fisted in the sheets, her body writhing beneath him. He could feel the tension building in her, a coil winding tighter and tighter
