The late afternoon sun slanted through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the university’s recreation center, turning the polished concrete floor into a gleaming, golden expanse. It was the magic hour, the time when the gym was mostly empty, caught in the quiet lull between the post-class rush and the evening intramural crowds. For Liam, it was the best time to be there. The relative solitude allowed him to focus, to lose himself in the rhythm of the iron and the burn of his muscles.
He was midway through a set of deadlifts, the barbell loaded with a satisfyingly heavy weight, when *she* walked in.
Chloe.
Liam’s focus shattered. The bar, which had felt so solid and manageable a moment before, suddenly seemed to double in weight. He completed his rep, the clang of the plates hitting the floor echoing a little too loudly in the cavernous space, and tried to pretend he wasn’t staring.
It was a futile effort. Everyone stared at Chloe. She had a presence that commanded attention without ever asking for it. She was in his Modern Physics lecture, the kind of student who sat in the front row, asked insightful questions, and made the notoriously difficult subject seem effortless. She was also, objectively, the most stunning woman Liam had ever seen.
Her hair, a cascade of dark, wavy curls, was piled into a messy bun that somehow looked both athletic and artfully done. She wore a pair of simple black leggings that hugged the powerful curve of her thighs and the firm swell of her ass, and a loose-fitting tank top that did little to hide the toned lines of her back and shoulders. As she walked towards the treadmills, Liam’s eyes traced the graceful line of her neck, the delicate shell of her ear.
He’d been nursing a crush on her for the better part of the semester. It was a quiet, hopeless sort of thing. They’d exchanged a few words—a “bless you” when she sneezed, a shared grimace when the professor announced a pop quiz—but nothing more. She was Chloe, and he was just Liam, the quiet guy in the back who was good at physics but terrible at talking to women, especially women like her.
He forced himself to turn away, to strip the weights from the bar. He tried to convince himself he wasn’t watching her reflection in the mirror as she stepped onto a treadmill, her movements fluid and confident. She started with a light jog, her body finding an easy, loping rhythm. The sound of her footfalls on the belt was a steady, hypnotic beat.
Liam moved to the squat rack, a position that gave him a frustratingly perfect, oblique view of the treadmills. He tried to concentrate, loading the bar, focusing on his form. But his eyes kept drifting. He watched the muscles in her calves flex with each stride, the subtle sway of her hips, the way a single, stubborn curl escaped her bun and bounced against her cheek.
After about twenty minutes, she slowed the machine to a walk, a cool-down. She wiped her face with a towel and stepped off, heading towards the free weights area. Liam’s heart gave a nervous jolt. She was walking right towards him.
He quickly busied himself with his own set, descending into a deep squat with the barbell across his shoulders. The weight was heavy, a familiar and grounding discomfort. When he pushed back up, his vision swimming slightly from the exertion, she was standing a few feet away, at the dumbbell rack.
She was doing bicep curls with a pair of moderate-weight dumbbells, her movements controlled and precise. Liam racked his barbell, his own workout all but forgotten. He grabbed a towel and dabbed at his forehead, trying to look casual, trying to look like he wasn't completely and utterly captivated.
He moved to a bench nearby, pretending to stretch. The air was thick with the scent of her—clean sweat and something floral, a light, subtle perfume that was driving him crazy. He could hear her soft, steady breaths as she worked.
“Hey, Liam, right?”
Her voice was a warm, melodic alto that cut through the gym’s ambient noise and went straight to his gut. He looked up, startled. She was smiling at him, a small, genuine smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes.
“Uh, yeah. Hey, Chloe,” he managed, his own voice sounding rough and unfamiliar to his ears.
“I thought so,” she said, setting the dumbbells down with a soft thud. She picked up her water bottle and took a long drink, and Liam’s eyes were drawn to the smooth column of her throat as she swallowed. “You’re in Dr. Evans’ physics class. You’re the guy who actually understands what he’s talking about.”
He felt a flush creep up his neck. “I do alright,” he mumbled, feeling like an idiot. “You seem to hold your own pretty well.”
She laughed, a light, airy sound that made his stomach flip. “I try. It’s mostly just staring at the equations until they start to make sense. Or until I give up and decide to become an art major.”
“You’d be a terrible art major,” he said, the words tumbling out before he could stop them.
Her eyebrows rose, a teasing glint in her dark eyes. “Oh, really? And why is that?”
He was in dangerous territory. His brain scrambled for a plausible, non-creepy explanation. “Because you actually seem to enjoy the problem-solving. You get this look when you’re working through a difficult proof. Like, a determined focus. You don’t strike me as the type to give up.”
The teasing look softened into something else, something thoughtful. “You’ve noticed that?”
She was standing close now, her hip cocked, her towel draped over her shoulder. The space between them felt charged, electric. He could see the fine sheen of sweat on her collarbone, a tiny mole near the hollow of her throat. His heart was hammering against his ribs.
“Hard not to,” he admitted, his voice quieter now.
She held his gaze for a long moment, a slow, deliberate appraisal that made every nerve ending in his body stand at attention. It was unnerving and exhilarating, and he felt as though she could see right through him, right to the core of his desperate, long-held crush.
“You know,” she said, her voice dropping a little, “it’s a lot more fun to work out with a partner. Pushes you harder.”
He swallowed hard. “Is that an offer?”
“Maybe,” she said, a playful smirk gracing her lips. “You seem like you know your way around a squat rack. I could use a spotter.”
His brain, usually so quick with data and formulas, had short-circuited entirely. Chloe, the object of his semester-long, silent adoration, was flirting with him. At least, he was pretty sure she was flirting. The idea was so foreign, so impossible, that he couldn’t quite process it.
“Yeah. I mean, sure. I could spot you,” he said, his voice cracking slightly on the word ‘sure’. He cleared his throat. “What are you working on? Squats? Bench?”
“Squats,” she said, her eyes twinkling. “Gotta work on that posterior chain, right?”
The way she said it, the word ‘posterior’ rolling off her tongue, sent a jolt of pure lust straight to his groin. He shifted his weight, suddenly self-conscious.
They walked over to the squat rack together. The silence between them was thick, heavy with unspoken things. He helped her load the bar, his fingers brushing against hers on the metal plate. The contact was brief, a whisper of skin on skin, but it sent a spark arcing through him.
She positioned herself under the bar, her back to him. “Ready?” she asked, her voice echoing slightly in the mirror.
He stood behind her, close enough to smell her perfume again, to see the tiny hairs at the nape of her neck. “Whenever you are.”
She unracked the weight, the bar bending slightly under the load, and began her descent. Her form was flawless, her back straight, her core tight. Liam’s eyes were glued to the reflection in the mirror, to the powerful flex of her glutes and hamstrings as she pushed back up. It was a hypnotic, almost torturous display of strength and sensuality.
He spotted her for three sets, his hands hovering just below the bar, his entire body humming with a tense, aching awareness. When she racked the weight for the final time, she let out a satisfied sigh and turned to face him. Her cheeks were flushed, her chest rising and falling with her quickened breaths. A loose strand of hair was plastered to her temple.
“Good set,” he said, his voice hoarse.
“Thanks,” she said, her gaze locking onto his. “I feel…energized.”
The air between them was thick with a potent, undeniable chemistry. The gym was nearly empty now, the only other person a guy on the other side of the room with his headphones on, completely oblivious.
“You know,” she said, taking a step closer to him, “I’ve seen you watching me.”
The blood rushed to Liam’s face. “I…what? No, I was just…” He trailed off, his denial sounding pathetic even to his own ears.
She took another step, closing the distance between them until only a few inches separated their bodies. He could feel the heat radiating from her, could see the flecks of gold in her dark brown eyes.
“It’s okay,” she murmured, her voice a low, intimate whisper. “I don’t mind.”
Her hand came up, her fingers tracing the line of his jaw. Her touch was electric, a searing heat that spread through him like wildfire. He was frozen, a statue of pent-up desire, unable to move, unable to speak.
“In fact,” she continued, her fingers trailing down his neck to rest on his chest, over his rapidly beating heart, “I’ve been watching you, too.”
That was all the confirmation he needed. The dam of his restraint, built up over months of silent longing, finally broke. He leaned in, his lips finding hers in a kiss that was anything but gentle. It was hungry and desperate, a frantic collision of mouths and tongues. She tasted of mint and the faint, salty tang of her sweat. Her hands fisted in the fabric of his t-shirt, pulling him closer as his own arms wrapped around her, his hands splaying across her back, pulling her soft, athletic body flush against his.
He walked her backward, his lips never leaving hers, until her back met the cool, hard surface of the wall next to the squat rack. She gasped against his mouth, a breathy, excited sound that made him harden instantly. He pressed his hips against hers, letting her feel the evidence of his arousal, and she responded with a low moan, her nails digging into his shoulders.
His hands roamed her body, learning the contours of her. He traced the curve of her waist, the flare of her hips, the firm, round swell of her ass through her leggings. She was even more incredible than he’d imagined, all lean muscle and soft, yielding curves.
His lips broke from hers, trailing a path of hot, open-mouthed kisses down her jaw, to the sensitive spot behind her ear. She shivered, a full-body tremor that vibrated through him. He continued his descent, his tongue tracing the corded muscle of her neck, licking the salt from her skin. She tilted her head back, a soft, keening cry escaping her lips.
His hands slid under the hem of her tank top
