The Mediterranean sun was a physical weight, a golden blanket that pressed down on the cobblestone streets of the Amalfi Coast. Sienna had been here for three days, and she was still not used to the way the light seemed to have a texture, a thickness that clung to the skin. She adjusted the strap of her sundress, a flimsy thing of pale yellow cotton, and fanned herself with a postcard she’d bought from a shop that sold limoncello in ceramic bottles shaped like monks.

She was on vacation with her family, a fact that was both a comfort and a constraint. The villa they’d rented was a sprawling, whitewashed maze of terraces and bougainvillea, perched precariously on a cliff overlooking a sea so blue it looked like a paint chip. It was perfect. And it was stifling.

Because he was here.

Liam. Her brother’s best friend. The man who had been a recurring, maddening feature of her life since she was thirteen and he was fifteen and she’d first noticed the way his forearms looked when he rolled up his sleeves to wash his car. He was thirty now, a successful architect in the city, and he’d been invited along on this family trip as he always was, a de facto member of their clan.

For Sienna, now twenty-eight, he was a walking, talking repository of every unrequited fantasy she’d ever had. He was tall, with the kind of lean, athletic build that suggested he spent his free time hiking or swimming rather than pumping iron. His hair was a dark, sun-streaked brown, perpetually messy in a way that made her fingers itch to run through it. And his eyes… they were the color of the sea just before a storm, a deep, turbulent gray-green that seemed to see right through her.

She’d spent the last decade and a half perfecting the art of not looking at him. Of laughing at his jokes with a casualness she didn't feel, of treating him with the same friendly indifference she showed her brother’s other friends. It was a masterclass in deception, and she was exhausted by it.

Today, the family had scattered. Her parents were off on a wine tour, her brother was nursing a hangover by the pool, and Sienna had seized the opportunity to escape to the small, semi-private beach cove a steep set of steps below the villa. She needed to clear her head, to stop the endless loop of Liam-related thoughts.

The cove was a postcard. A crescent of dark, volcanic sand, flanked by jagged rocks that rose like the spines of sleeping dragons. The water was crystal clear, lapping gently at the shore. She spread her towel on a flat rock, stripped down to her emerald green bikini, and lay back, letting the sun bake the tension from her muscles.

She must have dozed off. The next thing she knew, a shadow fell over her, and the sound of someone settling onto the rock beside her made her start.

“Sorry,” a familiar, low voice said. “Didn’t mean to wake you.”

Her heart hammered against her ribs. She didn’t need to open her eyes to know it was him. She could smell him—sandalwood, salt, and something uniquely, infuriatingly Liam.

She sat up, squinting against the glare. He was sitting a few feet away, his own towel spread out, wearing only a pair of dark blue swim trunks. The sun caught the fine, golden hairs on his chest and the defined muscles of his abdomen. A thin, white scar she’d never noticed before traced a path along his side, just above his hip.

“It’s fine,” she managed, her voice a little hoarse. “I was just… resting my eyes.”

He smiled, a slow, easy grin that crinkled the corners of his eyes. “Good book?” He nodded towards the paperback lying face-down on her towel.

“Trashy romance,” she admitted, a flush creeping up her neck. “It’s a vacation requirement.”

“No judgment,” he said, his gaze lingering on her face. “Sometimes you need a little fantasy.”

The word ‘fantasy’ hung in the air between them, charged and heavy. She looked away, out at the endless expanse of the sea. A small boat, white and fragile, was a speck on the horizon.

“You escaped the family too, huh?” she asked, trying to steer the conversation to safer, more mundane waters.

“Your brother’s snoring is a force of nature,” he said, leaning back on his elbows. “I figured I’d come down here and enjoy the quiet.”

The quiet. It was anything but quiet with him there. Every nerve ending in her body was alight, buzzing with a low, persistent hum of awareness. She was acutely conscious of her body, of the way the bikini top clung to her breasts, of the bare expanse of her stomach, of the length of her legs.

“It’s a beautiful spot,” she said, her voice sounding thin to her own ears.

“It is,” he agreed, but he wasn’t looking at the view. He was looking at her.

The air grew thick, humid. A bead of sweat traced a slow, torturous path from her temple down her cheek. She wanted to wipe it away, but she felt frozen, pinned by his gaze. He’d never looked at her like this before. Not in fifteen years. His usual expression was one of friendly, almost brotherly, amusement. This was different. This was focused. Intent.

“Sienna,” he said, and the sound of her name on his lips, in that low, serious tone, sent a shiver straight down her spine, a delicious tremor that settled low in her belly. “Can I tell you something?”

She swallowed hard, her throat dry. “Okay.”

He sat up, turning to face her fully. The space between them felt both impossibly vast and dangerously small. He reached out, and for a heart-stopping moment, she thought he was going to touch her face. Instead, he picked up the tube of sunscreen lying beside her.

“You’re going to burn,” he said, his voice softer now. “You have that fair, English-rose skin.”

“I’m Italian,” she corrected, a weak attempt at humor.

“On your mother’s side,” he countered. “Your father’s side is pure Irish porcelain.”

He uncapped the tube, squeezing a dollop of white cream into his palm. The scent of coconut and cocoa butter filled the air, mixing with the salt and the sandalwood.

“Let me,” he said. It wasn’t a question.

Her breath caught in her chest. This was the fantasy, the one she’d never dared to even fully articulate to herself. The one where his hands were on her. She gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.

His hands were warm, his touch firm and deliberate. He started with her shoulders, his thumbs pressing into the knots of tension she hadn’t even realized she was carrying. Her eyes fluttered shut. A soft sigh escaped her lips before she could stop it. His touch was electric, a circuit of fire that connected every point of contact to the very core of her. He worked the lotion into her skin, his hands moving in slow, circular motions, down her arms, his fingers tracing the delicate bones of her wrists.

“You’re always so tense,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her. “Always on guard.”

She didn't answer. She couldn't. Her entire world had narrowed to the feel of his hands on her skin. He moved behind her, his knees brushing her back, and applied more sunscreen to her neck, his fingers tangling in the fine hairs at her nape. She arched her back, a silent invitation, and she felt his breath hitch.

His hands slid down her spine, following the curve of her back, stopping just above the swell of her hips. The bikini top was a flimsy barrier, and she could feel the heat of his palms right through the fabric. She was trembling now, a fine, uncontrollable shiver that had nothing to do with the breeze coming off the water.

“Sienna,” he said again, his voice closer, right by her ear. His breath was warm, sending shivers cascading down her neck. “Look at me.”

She turned her head slowly, her eyes meeting his. The storm in his eyes had broken. It was raw, unguarded, and what she saw there made her heart slam against her ribs. It was the same hunger that had been gnawing at her for years, a reflection of her own secret, burning need.

“I’ve wanted to do this,” he said, his voice thick with emotion, “for a very, very long time.”

His hand came up, his fingers gently cupping her jaw. His thumb traced her lower lip, a feather-light touch that sent a jolt of pure, unadulterated lust through her. And then he was kissing her.

It wasn’t a gentle, tentative first kiss. It was a claiming. It was a decade and a half of suppressed longing exploding all at once. His mouth was firm and demanding, and she opened for him without hesitation, a desperate, keening sound rising in her throat. He tasted of the sea and the sun and something uniquely, powerfully *him*. His tongue swept into her mouth, tangling with hers in a slow, erotic dance that made her head spin and her toes curl into the hot sand.

His hands moved from her jaw, one tangling in her hair, the other sliding down her back, pulling her hard against his chest. She could feel the rapid thud of his heart, a perfect counterpoint to the wild drumming in her own chest. She could feel the hard planes of his body, the heat of his skin through the thin fabric of her bikini. Her hands, which had been frozen in her lap, came to life, sliding up the smooth, warm skin of his back, her nails digging lightly into his shoulders.

He groaned, a deep, guttural sound that reverberated through her. He broke the kiss, his forehead resting against hers, both of them panting for air.

“God, Sienna,” he breathed. “You have no idea… no idea how many times I’ve thought about this.”

“I think I do,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Because I’ve thought about it too.”

A low growl escaped him, and he was kissing her again, but this time it was different. It was slower, more exploratory, but no less intense. He kissed the corner of her mouth, her cheek, the sensitive spot just below her ear. His lips traced a path down the column of her throat, his teeth grazing her collarbone, and she moaned, a low, wanton sound that she would have been embarrassed by if she wasn’t so completely consumed by him.

His hands found the ties of her bikini top. He pulled back, his eyes dark and questioning.

“Yes,” she breathed, the word a prayer. “Please, yes.”

With a deft flick of his fingers, the knot came undone. The green fabric fell away, and she was bare to him, to the sun, to the sky. The warm breeze whispered across her nipples, making them tighten into hard, aching peaks. But she wasn’t cold. She was burning.

His gaze was a physical caress, moving slowly over her breasts, his expression one of pure, reverent awe.

“You’re so beautiful,” he murmured, the words rough with need.

He lowered his head, his mouth closing over one of the tight peaks. Sienna cried out, her back arching off the towel. His tongue swirled around the sensitive flesh, licking, sucking, drawing on her until
