The late afternoon sun streamed through the tall windows of the university library, turning the dust motes into a galaxy of tiny, dancing stars. For Leo, it was the most beautiful time of day. Not because of the golden light or the quiet hush that fell over the stacks, but because it was when she was usually there.
His eyes found her instantly, as they always did. Chloe. She was two rows over in the literature section, a place he had no academic reason to be. She was perched on a small, wheeled stool, reaching for a book on a high shelf. Her soft, round body was a study in curves and comfort. The gentle swell of her hips, encased in faded jeans, the inviting slope of her shoulders, the way her dark, wavy hair had escaped its loose ponytail to frame her full cheeks. He’d been watching her for the better part of a year, a silent, devoted observer from across lecture halls and dining commons. He knew her laugh, a rich, warm sound that made his stomach flip. He knew the way she bit her lower lip when she was concentrating, a habit he found utterly disarming.
He was a quiet guy, built lean and tall, more comfortable with code and complex theorems than with conversation. Chloe was a literature major, vibrant and expressive, always surrounded by a small circle of friends. She was a sun, and he was just a planet caught in her orbit, too far away to feel the warmth.
Today, however, his orbit was about to decay.
As she stretched, the stool wobbled precariously. She let out a small gasp, her fingers just brushing the spine of a thick, leather-bound volume. Leo’s heart lurched. He was moving before he even thought, his long legs eating up the distance between them.
“Whoa, careful,” he said, his voice rougher than he intended.
His hand shot out, not to catch her, but to steady the stool. His other hand landed on the small of her back, a reflex to keep her from falling. The contact was electric. He could feel the warmth of her skin through the thin cotton of her t-shirt, the soft, yielding flesh beneath. She was so much softer than he’d imagined, and he’d imagined it a lot.
Chloe froze, her head whipping around. Her eyes, a warm, intelligent brown, widened in surprise. “Oh! Leo. Hi.” A flush crept up her neck, staining her cheeks a lovely rose. “I… thanks. I didn’t see you there.”
He pulled his hand back as if burned, shoving it into his pocket. “Sorry. I just… you looked like you were going to fall.”
“I’m glad you were here,” she said, her voice a little breathless. She climbed down from the stool, her movements less graceful than usual, and turned to face him fully. She was close, close enough for him to smell the faint, sweet scent of her shampoo—something like vanilla and berries. “Were you looking for something?”
“Uh, yeah,” he lied, his brain scrambling. “Just… browsing.”
A knowing smile played on her lips. “In the Victorian poetry section? I didn’t peg you for a Browning fan.”
He felt the heat rise to his own face. “I’m full of surprises.”
“I’m sure you are,” she murmured, her gaze lingering on his. The air between them thickened, charged with something unspoken. For a moment, the library’s quiet was deafening.
She broke the spell, gesturing to the book she’d been trying to reach. “I’ve been trying to get that down for five minutes. It’s for my senior thesis.”
He looked up. It was a collection of essays on feminist literary theory. Without a word, he reached up and easily plucked it from the shelf. His arm brushed against hers as he handed it to her, the simple touch sending a shiver down his spine.
“Thanks,” she breathed, clutching the book to her chest. Her nipples, he noticed with a jolt of raw lust, were pebbling against the fabric of her shirt. The sight made his mouth go dry.
“No problem,” he managed. “Well, I should… let you get back to it.”
“Wait,” she said, the word sharp and sudden. He stopped, his heart hammering against his ribs. “A bunch of us are going to The Drop later. It’s a new coffee place off campus. You should come. It’s a good study spot.”
The invitation hung in the air. It was casual, friendly. But her eyes held a hint of something more, a glimmer of hope that mirrored his own. His carefully constructed wall of shyness began to crumble.
“Yeah,” he heard himself say. “Okay. What time?”
“Eight,” she said, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across her face. It was like watching the sun come out. “I’ll see you there.”
Leo nodded, not trusting his voice. He turned and walked away, his legs feeling like jelly. He didn’t look back, but he could feel her gaze on him, a warm, palpable weight. He had a date. Well, not a date. A group hang. But he would be there. With her.
—
The Drop was a cozy, warmly-lit cafe with exposed brick walls and mismatched vintage furniture. When Leo arrived, Chloe was already there, seated in a plush armchair by the window. Her friends were with her, a lively group he recognized. He almost turned and fled, the anxiety a cold knot in his stomach. But then Chloe spotted him, her face lighting up with that same smile from the library. She waved him over.
He navigated the room, pulling an empty chair next to hers. The conversation flowed around him, but he was acutely aware of her presence. Her knee occasionally brushed against his, a casual touch that sent a jolt of fire through him. He’d nurse his coffee for an hour, content just to be near her.
As the evening wore on, her friends began to peel off, citing early classes or looming deadlines. Soon, it was just the two of them.
“They’re nice,” Leo said, a safe, neutral observation.
“They are,” Chloe agreed. She turned to him, her expression serious. “I’m glad you came.” She leaned forward, her elbows on her knees, creating an intimate bubble around them. “Can I ask you something, Leo?”
He swallowed hard. “Sure.”
“Why do you always hide in the back of the lecture hall? You’re not invisible, you know. I’ve… I’ve noticed you.” Her voice was soft, confessional. “Since the first week of Dr. Evans’ class. You’re the only one who ever answers his impossible questions correctly. And you always look so… focused.”
His heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest. Chloe, the girl he’d been admiring from afar for months, had noticed him. Had been watching him too. The realization was intoxicating.
“I’m not much for crowds,” he admitted, his voice low.
“Me neither, really,” she said, surprising him. “I just pretend to be.” Her gaze dropped to his lips, then back up to his eyes. The air crackled with tension. “This is going to sound crazy,” she whispered, “but I’m really, really glad you were in the poetry section today.”
He couldn’t stand it anymore. He leaned in, closing the last few inches between them. “So am I,” he murmured, and then his lips were on hers.
The kiss was tentative at first, a gentle question. Her lips were soft and full, tasting faintly of mocha. But when she sighed into his mouth, a small, yielding sound, the kiss deepened. His hand came up to cup her jaw, his thumb stroking the soft skin of her cheek. She leaned into him, her hand finding his thigh, her fingers digging into the denim of his jeans. The world around them dissolved, leaving only the feel of her, the taste of her.
When they finally broke apart, they were both breathing heavily. Her cheeks were flushed, her lips slightly swollen. Her eyes were dark with a desire that mirrored his own.
“My apartment is just two blocks away,” she said, her voice a husky whisper. “And my roommate’s gone for the weekend.”
It was all the invitation he needed.
—
Chloe’s apartment was warm and inviting, filled with the scent of her. Books were stacked on the coffee table and overflowed from the bookshelves. A half-finished mug of tea sat on the counter. He barely had time to take it all in before she took his hand and led him toward her bedroom.
The room was exactly as he’d imagined—a reflection of her personality. Soft lighting from a bedside lamp, a plush duvet on the bed, a faint, sweet scent that was uniquely her.
She turned to face him, her back to the bed. The confidence she’d shown earlier was gone, replaced by a hint of vulnerability. “I don’t usually do this,” she confessed, her fingers toying with the hem of her shirt.
“Neither do I,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. He stepped closer, his hands coming to rest on her waist. She was so soft, so warm, so real. “I’ve wanted this for so long, Chloe.”
Her eyes widened. “You have?”
“You have no idea,” he breathed. He leaned down and kissed her again, more fiercely this time, pouring all the months of silent longing into the kiss. She responded with equal fervor, her hands tangling in his hair, pulling him closer.
His hands roamed over her back, feeling the gentle dip of her waist, the generous curve of her hips. He’d dreamed of this, of holding her like this, and the reality was a thousand times better. He broke the kiss and looked down at the generous swell of her breasts, her nipples straining against the thin fabric. His mouth went dry.
“Can I see you?” he asked, his voice husky with desire.
She nodded, a shy, beautiful smile on her face. She pulled her t-shirt over her head and dropped it to the floor. She was wearing a simple, black silk bra, the cups straining to contain her full, heavy breasts. His breath caught in his throat. She was gorgeous. A goddess. Every curve, every soft line, was perfect. He ached to touch her.
He let his fingers trail down her arms, then back up, his thumbs brushing against the silk of her bra. He could feel the hard pebble of her nipple through the fabric, and she let out a shuddering breath.
“Leo,” she whispered, her voice pleading.
He needed no further encouragement. He unhooked her bra with a practiced ease that surprised even him, letting it fall away. And then she was there, bare before him. Her breasts were full and round, the skin pale and smooth. Her nipples were a dusky rose color, hard and tight.
“You are so beautiful,” he groaned, his voice thick with reverence.
He lowered his head, taking one of her delicious, tight peaks into his mouth. She cried out, a sharp, sweet sound, and her hands fisted in his shirt. He suckled gently, his tongue tracing lazy circles around the areola, his other hand coming up to cup her other breast. She was so soft, so pliant in his hands. He could feel the weight of it, the warmth. He lavished attention on her, first one breast, then the other, listening to the sounds she made, the little gasps and moans that were driving him crazy.
She tugged at his shirt, her impatience growing. “You, too,” she managed,
