The cheap string lights draped across the porch cast a warm, honeyed glow over the assembled crowd. Mason held his red plastic cup, the beer inside going warm and flat, and let his gaze drift over the familiar faces of his friends from college. It was a housewarming party for their friend Sarah, a sprawling, slightly dilapidated Victorian she’d inherited from her grandmother. The air was thick with the scent of cheap candles, spilled liquor, and the promise of a night that could go anywhere.

He was anchored to the spot, leaning against the railing, watching the usual ebb and flow of the party until the screen door creaked open and she walked out.

Dana.

It was like the background noise of the party—the thumping bass, the laughter, the clinking of bottles—all of it faded to a low hum, just a soundtrack for her entrance. She wore a simple, floral sundress the color of a summer sky, the thin straps revealing the smooth, sun-warmed skin of her shoulders. Her dark hair was piled into a loose, artful mess on top of her head, with a few rebellious strands curling down her neck. A small, silver anklet glinted on her slender foot, which was clad in a worn pair of sandals.

She was laughing at something someone inside had said, her head tilted back, the column of her throat exposed. That laugh. He’d been hearing it, cataloging it, dreaming about it for the better part of eight years. Since that summer after freshman year when she’d challenged him to a beer-chugging contest and won, a triumphant, breathless grin on her face. Since she’d fallen asleep on his shoulder on the drive home from a camping trip, her breath a warm, steady whisper against his neck. Since she’d danced with him at a dozen other parties, her body a tantalizing few inches away from his, the scent of her shampoo—something floral and clean—driving him to a quiet, agonizing madness.

He was the friend. The reliable, funny, good-old-Mason friend. He’d held her hair back when she was sick, let her crash on his couch after bad breakups, and listened to her excitedly talk about handsome strangers who never seemed to make the cut. He’d watched her date a parade of men who didn’t deserve her, all the while his heart ached with a secret, patient, burning hunger.

Tonight, something felt different. Maybe it was the oppressive humidity in the air, the kind that makes your skin feel tight and sensitive. Maybe it was the two beers he’d already had, loosening his usual careful restraint. Maybe it was the way the fading evening light caught the curve of her calf as she walked, or the way her sundress swayed against her hips as she navigated the crowd.

She spotted him and her face lit up. That was the thing. She was always genuinely happy to see him. It was a special kind of torture.

“Mason!” she exclaimed, navigating the small knots of people to reach him. She gave him a quick, one-armed hug, her body pressing against his side just long enough for him to feel the firm, warm shape of her breast against his ribs. The scent of her, that same clean, floral scent now mixed with a hint of sunscreen and her own warm skin, hit him like a physical blow. “You’ve been hiding out here all night.”

“Just enjoying the view,” he said, his voice coming out a little rougher than he intended. It was a true statement, far truer than she knew.

She rolled her eyes, a familiar, fond gesture. “Smooth. Very smooth.” She took a sip from the glass of white wine she was holding. “Sarah’s decor is… an adventure. She has a taxidermied squirrel in the bathroom clutching a tiny chainsaw.”

Mason laughed, the sound easing some of the tension in his chest. “It’s a statement piece.”

“It’s a cry for help is what it is.” She leaned her elbows on the railing beside him, her shoulder brushing his. She was close enough that he could see the tiny freckles dusted across the bridge of her nose, the way her lips—painted a soft, glossy pink—curved into a genuine smile. He watched her gaze drift over the party, a thoughtful look on her face.

“It’s funny,” she said, not looking at him. “I’m surrounded by all these people, and I still feel kind of… alone.” She laughed, a self-deprecating sound. “God, that sounds pathetic, doesn’t it?”

“Not pathetic,” he said softly, his gaze fixed on her profile. “I know the feeling.”

She turned to him then, and for a moment, the noise of the party seemed to recede completely. Her eyes, a deep, warm brown, held his, and there was a vulnerability there he’d never seen before. It was a crack in her perfect, always-together façade.

“Do you?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

His heart hammered against his ribs. This was it. This was the opening he’d been waiting for, the one he’d rehearsed in his head a thousand times. He should say something profound, something romantic. Instead, he said, “I’ve been here all night, watching everyone, and I haven’t really seen anyone either. Not until you walked out that door.”

The words hung in the air between them, heavy and laden with meaning. Her lips parted slightly, and he saw her breath hitch. The air between them grew thick, charged with a current of unspoken electricity. He could feel the heat radiating from her skin, a mere inch away.

“Mason…” she started, her voice trailing off.

He reached out, his fingers brushing against the exposed skin of her forearm, right above where her bracelet dangled. Her skin was incredibly soft, and impossibly warm. At his touch, she didn’t pull away. Instead, her eyes widened, and she seemed to lean into him, her personal space dissolving like sugar in rain.

“I’m tired of pretending, Dana,” he confessed, the words spilling out, raw and honest. “I’m tired of watching you from across the room.” His thumb stroked a slow, deliberate circle on her inner wrist.

Her pupils dilated, swallowing the warm brown of her irises. She licked her lips, a quick, unconscious flick of her tongue that sent a jolt of pure, animalistic desire straight to his groin. “Then stop watching,” she said, her voice low and husky. “What do you want to do?”

It wasn’t a coquettish question. It was a sincere, open invitation. A dare.

“What I’ve wanted to do for eight years,” he said, his voice dropping to a husky whisper. “Kiss you.”

Her answer was to close the distance between them. Her lips met his, soft and hesitant at first, just a gentle press. But then he moved his hand to the small of her back, pulling her flush against him, and the tentative kiss ignited. Her mouth parted under his, and he tasted the sweet, crisp wine on her tongue. It was a slow, deep, searching kiss that tasted of longing and desperation and eight years of pent-up desire.

She moaned softly against his mouth, her fingers curling into the fabric of his t-shirt at his chest. The sound was a jolt of pure electricity. He deepened the kiss, his tongue sliding against hers, and he could feel her response in the way her body melted against his, the way her hand slid up from his chest to the back of his neck, pulling him down into her.

They broke apart, breathless, their foreheads resting together. Her eyes were dazed, her lips swollen and slick with their shared kiss.

“Sarah has a guest room upstairs,” she whispered, her voice trembling with a barely contained excitement.

He didn’t need a second invitation. He took her hand, lacing his fingers through hers, and pulled her away from the railing, through the crowd of oblivious partygoers. They moved through the living room, past the laughing faces and the throbbing music, past the taxidermied squirrel, and up the creaking, narrow staircase.

The upstairs hallway was dark and quiet, a world away from the cacophony below. The sounds of the party were muffled, distant, like a memory. Sarah’s guest room was a cluttered space with a queen-sized bed draped in an old quilt. The only light came from the hallway, casting long, soft shadows.

He closed the door behind them, the latch clicking shut with a sound of finality. In the dim light, she turned to face him, her chest rising and falling with quick, shallow breaths. Her eyes were luminous, full of a hungry anticipation that matched his own.

He didn’t waste any time. He closed the distance between them, his hands going to the straps of her sundress. He slid them down her shoulders, the fabric whispering over her skin. The dress pooled at her feet, and she stood before him in a simple white lace bra and matching panties, her skin glowing in the pale light.

She was beautiful. Not in a posed, airbrushed way, but in a real, tangible, breathtaking way. The gentle curve of her hips, the soft swell of her breasts, the faint, luminous quality of her skin. He drank her in, his gaze a slow, appreciative caress.

“You’re so beautiful,” he breathed, his voice thick with awe and desire.

A small, shy smile touched her lips. “Then come here.”

She stepped backward toward the bed, her hands reaching behind her to unhook her bra. It fell away, and her breasts were freed, the dusky pink nipples already pebbled and tight from the cool air and her desire. He pulled his own t-shirt over his head, discarding it impatiently. She watched him, her gaze lingering on his chest, her eyes darkening with a matching hunger.

They came together on the bed, a tangle of limbs and scrambling hands. The kiss was more frantic this time, laced with a desperate need to finally touch, to finally taste. His hands roamed her body, learning the terrain he’d only imagined for so long. He cupped her breast, his thumb circling her nipple, and a gasp escaped her lips. She arched into his touch, her head falling back.

He lowered his mouth to her neck, tasting the salt of her skin, before moving down to the hollow of her throat, then to the delicate skin between her breasts. He took her nipple into his mouth, sucking lightly, and a guttural moan tore from her throat. She fisted her hands in his hair, pulling him closer, whispering frantic, incoherent encouragements.

“Mason, please,” she begged, her voice a breathy plea. “I want you. I’ve wanted you for so long.”

The confession was a flame to his desire. He slid his hand down her stomach, his fingers hooking into the waistband of her silky panties. He pulled them down her legs, and she kicked them free. She was bare beneath him, completely open and vulnerable.

He slid his hand between her thighs. She was already slick and wet for him, her body a testament to her own longing. He stroked her, his fingers gliding through the hot, slippery folds, finding her clit. At his touch, she bucked her hips, a sharp cry escaping her lips.

“Look at me, Dana,” he commanded, his voice low. He wanted to see it in her eyes. He wanted to see the desire, the surrender.

She opened her eyes, her gaze locked on his. He held her stare as he circled her clit with his thumb, pushing his finger inside her
